Congratulations to David Skaith who is now the Mayor for the York and North Yorkshire combined authority. He will lead investment of at least £540 million over the next 30 years and will take on the role and responsibilities of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.  His five pledges are:

  • Deliver a cost-of-living recovery plan
  • Fight for more GP and dentist appointments
  • Tackle crime and antisocial behaviour in urban, rural, and coastal areas
  • Connect communities with a new transport system
  • Champion York and North Yorkshire and attract new investment

David was joined by Sir Keir Starmer, Rachel Reeves (Shadow Chancellor), Rachael Maskell, MP for York, Keir Mather, MP for Selby, Luke Charters, candidate for York Outer, and Alison Hulme, candidate for Scarborough & Whitby, at Northallerton Football Club.

In his speech, Sir Keir said that “It’s an amazing moment in history, to have a Labour victory here. We have had really good results across the country all day long, but this is a very, very special moment, David, to become the mayor here. Through the villages and the towns of North Yorkshire, people are voting for change. They voted for Labour, a changed Labour Party able to earn the trust and the respect of voters in York and North Yorkshire”
