Labour Party Candidate for Thornton Dale
I have lived in Yorkshire for fifty years, the last thirteen in the village of Ebberston. After forty years in local and central government I now spend my spare time keeping bees.
Problems in urban areas are plain to see but in an area like Ryedale it is sometimes assumed that because problems are hidden from view there aren’t any. The lack of serious engagement by Ryedale Council suggests many councillors see it that way. But low pay, lack of jobs, lack of affordable housing, impossible public transport, disappearing banks and village shops are undermining the quality of life for many in Ryedale.
There is a need for change on Malton Council. I feel strongly about the lack of affordable housing and I know, from my professional experience in this field, that Ryedale Council could do far more about this. In 2018 there were 619 families on the Ryedale waiting list but only 149 families got a housing association home during 2017/18. Ryedale people deserve better than this and Ryedale Council could do better if it had the will.
