The ballot form, whether postal vote or issued at your Polling Station on the day, invites you to vote for a second preference. You don’t have to. Your vote is perfectly valid if you only vote for our candidate Alison Hume. The method being used is the Supplementary Vote system. The second preference vote only comes into play if no candidate gets over 50% on the first count. In that case the top two stay in, the rest are eliminated and any second votes cast by voters whose first choice is eliminated are added to the count. The system is determined by the Electoral Commission and is the same across all PCC/PFCC and Mayoral elections taking place on 6th May. It is up to you whether you use your second preference. Personally, I won’t vote for any other party.
If you have a postal vote but didn’t get round to posting it, just bring it to your normal polling station on 6th May. Make sure it is completed and sealed just as if you were going to post it, and hand it to the polling staff. You will not be able to get a fresh voting slip at the polling station.
If you do not have a postal vote but can’t find your Poll Card you still can and should vote. Just go to your polling station, tell the polling staff your name and address and they will give you your voting slip. This is normal procedure. The staff will not mind and will be very pleased to see you. If you don’t know where your polling station is just ask a neighbour. Theirs will be the same.
This is a vital message that you can help to get across in the run up to polling day on 6th May, An excellent letter on this by Rosie Cousins was published in Yorkshire Bylines today and is reproduced here: https://thirskandmalton.laboursites.org/letters-to-the-editor-alison-hume/; We need to maximize our social media impact with this and you can really help by sharing this link on your social media accounts Twitter, WhatsApp, Facebook, Linkedin, Reddit etc. Also, please share and ‘like’ content from the CLP’s Facebook thirskandmaltonclp, Twitter @tandmclp and Instagram thirskmaltonlabour/accounts.
