Seminar 9.) Populism and how it can be defeated.

The main beneficiaries of the new media age are populist parties and movements, such as UKIP, BREXIT Party, Trump, Erdogan and Oban. This talk unpacks the character of populism, how it works and why it is so successful in attracting democratic support. Whether and how Labour should adopt more populist tactics, will engage the last part of the talk.

Recordings of the first four seminars are now On Our Website. The rest will follow. I would like on behalf of the CLP to give John a huge thanks. The seminars and discussions have been great, very stimulating, and sometimes hotly debated. John has put an enormous amount of work into them and together with Mark White has created a permanent resource of value to all.

USA Presidential Elections

We can’t do anything about them but the result will impact hugely on us and the rest of the world. You may be interested in a couple of excellent websites which track the opinion polls day by day and state by state. There is a staggering amount of information. They show Biden with a consistent but fairly narrow lead nationally. If the election were tomorrow he would win the presidential race comfortably but President Trumps support has never fallen below 40%. He will certainly see it as winnable and will be pulling every trick conceivable to mobilise his core support, which in part explains his ambivalence on the George Floyd murder. The sites to watch are RealClearPolitics and I’ve got to admit I’m hooked. Texas just went tied!

Best wishes, Mick Johnston Secretary of Thirsk & Malton Constituency Labour Party
