Government in Disarray

Whatever you think about them it is deeply troubling to see the Government now descending into chaos in its handling of the Coronavirus epidemic. The international community is aghast at the premature and garbled lifting of lock down, the devolved administrations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have now gone their own way and it is likely that many of the people and employers of England will do the same until the Government regains some coherence and rationality.  In parliament the gloves are off and it is well worth listening to some of the debate today (11th May) on Parliament Live. I recommend in particular Keir Starmer at 15.44 – forensic, Rachel Reeves at 17.39  – withering, Dr.Philippa Whitford SNP at 17.52 – brilliant, Jeremy Hunt at 18.01 – damning, Sir Desmond Swayne Tory for New Forest at 18.09 – shocking. And a lot more.

More Brilliant Seminars from Dr. John

If you’ve not been able to catch these you really are missing a treat. The facts and material John uses are rich and fascinating and he relates in an absorbing and very accessible way. And everyone gets a chance to have give their view or ask questions. Next two are:-

Nationalism. May 14th at 2.00pm

Great Britain is fast breaking up and descending into 4 nation states under the impact of nationalist ideologies and parties like the Scottish Nationalist Party. What is nationalism, how does it work, why are such parties attracting such popular support? My argument is that nationalism is a malicious polemic that sets citizens against one another on the grounds of a fiction – that all members of one group share a common identity but only within one Nation. Labours answer must be, as Lisa Nandy argued recently, to create and join a larger community of  ‘We’s’ in more global, cosmopolitan communities for mutual security and benefit. Click Here at 2.00 on 14th May to join in using a PC, laptop or tablet. Far, Extreme & Alt Right Ideologies – 21st May 7.00pm.

All around the world far right political parties are gaining support and taking over the government of many States. How do we explain the rise of Trump, Johnson, Modi, Erdogan, Orban, Le Pen, AFD, UKIP, BREXIT Party? My thesis is the Far Right construct narratives of ‘them and us’ to deflect blame from themselves and scapegoat alien others, while they feast on fear. Constructing a wider ‘We’ is one effective answer.  Click Here at 7.00 on 21st May to join in using a PC, laptop or tablet. Using a smartphone dial 441314601196,,85668653272# United Kingdom

Labour and Co-operative Party

You may have wondered why some Labour members of parliament like Rachael Maskell, Barry Sheerman, Alex Sobel, Tracy Brabin and Anneliese Dodds  appear on listings as Labour and Co-operative Party. There are in fact 26 MPs who are Labour and Co-operative Party and over 800 local authority councillors. The reason was discussed in our seminar on the history of the Labour Party and stems from the Co-operative movement, which started in Rochdale in 1844, being one of the driving forces of socialism which eventually led to the formation and progress of the Labour Party. The Co-operative Party has a great deal to offer today in terms of alternative financial and business models to capitalist enterprises, for housing co-operatives, worker owned businesses and credit unions as well as the shops everyone knows. To find out more visit the Co-op Party Website . You might consider joining it as a way of supporting practical socialism. We could certainly do with a housing co-op in Ryedale.

Best wishes, Mick Johnston Secretary of Thirsk & Malton Constituency Labour Party
