Reading Terrorist Murders: Not a time for party politics, says Keir

“It’s horrific that it happened … and across Reading, across the country there will be communities really upset and worried about this, united in their grief. And all of our thoughts are with those who have lost someone in this. It’s very important that the investigation runs its course but I will want to work with the government in response to this, to look at whether there’s lessons that can be learned, whether there need to be changes to the law. But I think as a constructive opposition, I will want to speak to the prime minister to discuss how together, we can improve the response, learn from this. The investigation must be completed, but of course, this is not a time for party politics.” Keir Starmer statement. Keir Starmer Video

County Council Elections. Consider Standing.

We have now got the go ahead to use video conferencing to select our candidates to stand in the 2021 elections of Councillors to the North Yorkshire County Council. The NYCC is responsible for delivery of vital public services including education, adult social care, transport, control of minerals extraction and waste disposal. There are currently just four Labour councillors out of the total of 72. 51 are Tories. No Labour councillor represents any of the twelve county electoral divisions (County Wards) in the Thirsk & Malton area. In two seats Tories were elected unopposed.

It is our duty to ensure every voter has the opportunity to vote for a socialist and we aim to stand a candidate in each of the twelve seats. The NEC has set end of July as the deadline for identifying candidates. We currently have five seats covered: Easingwold, Stillington, Sowerby, Kirkbymoorside and Thornton Dale/Wolds. We are therefore seeking candidates for Pickering, Norton, Malton, Hovingham/Sheriff Hutton, Filey and Hunmanby. Any member with over a years membership can apply to be a candidate although relevant knowledge and experience is clearly important. If you are interested in standing please contact Mark White mark.gwyn@outlook.com , Jill Wells jillwells4labour@gmail.com or me mick.johnston@gmx.co.uk We will provide the information and any support you may need.

Campaign Funds Appeal

With 1 in 5 votes cast in the General Election going to Labour in Thirsk and Malton, do you think it’s fair that all those Labour voters – over 10,000 of them – have no representation at local government level? We’re gearing up for the 2021 elections to North Yorkshire County Council, aiming to have Labour councillors elected. Can you help us by donating to campaign funds? Any amount large or small will be gratefully received.
